SSKC Karate Championships - Sunday 2nd May 2010

Barlby High School, York Road, Barlby, Selby YO8 5JP

The aim of the championships is to teach our students about and provide our higher grades with experience in running competitions, so they can officiate in Open championships.

We need the support of every karateka from Haxby,

Selby and York dojo to make the event a success.

There will be up to thirteen events with Cups and medals for each event.

Registration 13.00hrs, Championships start 13.30 hrs prompt!

With the assistance of our sponsors we have set a nominal fee of £5.00 for each karateka, this covers entry into all events that your Sensei will select you for.
Your fee must be paid to you club by 9th April when entries will close, there will be no entries on the day.

Event 1 – Under 9 - Kata – Mixed
Event 2 – Under 12 - Kata – Mixed
Event 3 – Under 17 – Kata – Mixed “The TSB Cup”
Event 4 – Over 16 – Kata – Mixed – Beg to 3rd Kyu “The Lawrence Hannah Cup”
Event 5 – Over 16 – Kata – Mixed – 2nd & 1st Kyu + Under 22 Shodan “The Lawrence Hannah Cup”
Event 6 – Family Kata – (Parent + Child or Child + Child) “The Gough & Kelly Cup”
Event 7 – Under 9 Kumite – “Knee boxing” – Mixed
Event 8 – Under 12 – Kumite – Shobu Ippon – Mixed
Event 9 – Under 17 – Kumite – Shobu Ippon - Mixed “The SSKC Kumite Cup”
Event 10 - Over 16 – Kumite – Shobu Ippon - Male – Beg to 3rd Kyu “The HT Scaffolding Cup”
Event 11 – O16 – Kumite – Shobu Ippon – Female – Beg to 3rd Kyu - “The HT Scaffolding Cup”
Event 12- O16 – Kumite – Shobu Ippon - Male – 2nd & 1st Kyu + U22 Shodan “The Denby Security Cup”
Event 13 - O16 – Kumite – Shobu Ippon - Female – 2nd & 1st Kyu + U22 Shodan (TBC)

The Events will be run on two adjacent areas to the semi finals.

The Over 16 and finals of the junior events will be undertaken on a central area.

The event will conclude with cup and medal presentations and an IJKA Yorkshire 2010 photograph.

All karateka will be expected to stay to the end of the event to support your club. The event will conclude at approx 17.30 hrs.

What Block Jim?

As you raise through the grades you should put some effort in to improving your knowledge of karate terminology. This will improve your understanding and in most cases make your training and grading easier as you will understand what you about to do before it is demonstrated.

Jim (visiting from the Haxby dojo) had described a block tonight as "Ude-Barai", but how does this translate to English?
While we are all familiar with "Gedan Bari", Gedan meaning lower level and Barai as sweep or parry.
To confuse things a little "Ude" is often interchanged with "Wan" and both mean arm.

So "Ude Barai" is arm sweep, it would be very difficult to sweep with the top of the arm and that it why it is usually referring to a forearm sweeping block or parry.
The forearm is "Zenwan" or sometimes "Shubo" which literally translates as "arm stick".

Different parts of the forearm also have their own terms:
"Haiwan" is the back of the forearms in left arm in H2 move 1.
"Naiwan" is the inside of the forearm (Thumb side)
"Gaiwan" is the outside of the forearm (Little finger side)
"Shuwan" is the underside of the forearm
remember all of the above are parts of the body not names of blocks in them self.

So Jim What you understand as "Ude Barai" could be explained as "Naiwan Barai" - Inside of forearm sweeping block / parry. Not every instructor will describe the same block in the same way, because as you can see you could describe the block detailing the inner forearm, the forearm or the whole arm, none of them would be wrong just not so specific. You could also add terms to the description to explain if the block comes from the outside or the inside, if it is at one level, rising or blocking down, seamlessly never ending......

My best advise is to try and pick up a few terms every month, you should be able to describe all the moves of all the kata you already know. If you think about it you may get stuck even at the beginning of H2?

Active York Open Day

Active York held an open day in York town centre on Saturday and karateka were there from Haxby, Selby and York clubs to promote the IJKA.

Between the three clubs we produced a well rounded display. Many thanks to all of you who participated and helped out handing out leaflets. Our Display consisted of the following:

Kata- Family Heian Shodan - The Bamfords - HSKC, 9. Self defense - Emma & Mike - YSKC, 10. Triangle Training - Mike, Don & Max - YSKC, 11. Kata & Bunkai - Sensei Mike, Paul & Simon - H&SSKC's.

All of the individual elements were very well received, we pulled the biggest crowd of the day and after each section there was a big round of applause. Our students did us proud and there were some very positive feedback from members of the public.

Emma put together a strong display for a green belt, we will be sorry to see her go when she returns to University in the Autumn. Emma has promised to maintain her links with the IJKA and turn up at Sensei Kato's Christmas course. Emma, not a lady to be messed with apparently.

As Sensei Mike stamps on Simon's head, Shihan Gullen heard a lady from the crowd say, "Well there was no need for that, was there?". The initial Jiyu Ippon defence was delivered slowly and controlled so the full technique could be demonstrated and then the next attack and defense, speed and power. Look out for Simon's excellent Mawashi Geri at the end. Sensei Mike was glad he pulled his head back just a little.

At the end of the demo we performed Kanku Sho, after returning to yoi we went straight into the bunkai. It went about 95% to plan, we were reasonably happy with the result considering the amount of time we had to put it together.

Leaflets were handed out for free karate sessions at any of the IJKA Yorkshire clubs of Haxby, Selby or York. If you didn't pick up a leaflet, but are interested in participating in a couple of free sessions just drop me a E Mail and I will be happy to make the necessary introductions.

SSKC Inter Club Competition

What a great evening!
Thank You to everyone that took part and made the evening a great success.
Karateka from Haxby and York clubs were invited to take part in the SSKC competition.
It is one thing to invite other clubs, but surely it was bad manners of Haxby to walk off with all our silverware.
Congratulations Nick for winning both the TSB Kata and Kumite Cups, hopefully this will inspire you to train even harder towards your black belt.

Open Day in York 23rd May

Haxby, York and Selby clubs are taking part in an "Active York" sports club day in Parliament street in the centre of York. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to promote our clubs in the community. we will have a stall to man from 10am to 4pm and we have a 25 min display slot to fill at around Noon.

We would like to encourage a many members as possible to support the day ideally from 11am to 1 pm as a core time for those with other commitments.

Each of the clubs will take up some of the slot and we will produce some flyers with details of the three clubs on.

If you make it please let your club instructors know ASAP, any assistance will be greatly received.

Simon grades to Shodan

It was a little cold at Sensei Kato's this weekend, Simon keeps warm in a sleeping bag and adopts a latent training technique that he learnt from his Instructor - Sensei Ian Shaw.

A few less karateka on the course due to the weather etc, but yet again an excellent time. I enjoyed the kata, Sensei focusing on instructing on the core Shotokan kata where he sees the most mistakes.

Sensei also went on to teach Joko Nesei, but I must admit I never really got to grips with it. The grey cell let me down again. It appeared to be more complex than Joko Issei and Sansei, but perhaps that is just me?

As always Simon trained hard over the weekend and performed well in his grading, a well deserved pass.

Congratulations Simon on attaining your Shodan - well done!

Who said "Johan who?" Johan the guy that will be grading for his Shodan in 2009, that's who! He is also known as Dave Stav's mentor as Johan has been a 1st Kyu as long as anyone can remember. Johan, just do 6 months concerted training and you would get Shodan easy!

Kung Fu Panda

Tonight approx twenty karateka from Haxby and Selby dojos visited the cinema to see if we were to be bestowed the honour of the dragon warrior. Unfortunately Oogway chose Po.

Much like Sensei Ian, Master Sifu struggled to impart his wisdom, but he eventually finds a way to unlock Po's warrior beneath, through his stomach.

The lesson we all learnt tonight....there is no secret ingredient!

Some say that Sensei Ian looked a little like Po on Thursday night when he instructed Rebecca to kick him Mawashi geri Jodan, he missed the block and got a toe in the eye.

For those that couldn't make it, beware... we now have all the moves and the secret of the little pinkie!

Sensei Helen is Suffolk bound

Watch out Suffolk the "Selby Stig / CSI Selby" is on her way to terrify you for at least 6 months. Unfortunately for us Helen has landed her dream job as a crime scene investigator, initially on a 6 month contract. At least she can put all her hard work doing that degree into practice.

Haxby, Selby and York clubs had a few beers last night and we presented Helen with her personalised Black Belt and a little reminder from the club. Wishing you all the best Helen, Osu!

Helen joined SSKC just after I did in early 2000, but had soon overtaken me in grade, when she went to university I caught up again and we have always been similar grades training together for the last eight years.

We will not lose her completely, she will be training with us when she returns to see her family at the odd weekend. Helen has also looked at the best route to get from Suffolk to Whitchurch for Black and Brown belt courses. I believe Helen also has her sights on the European Championships in 2008.

Sensei Mike Gude visits Selby Club

This Sunday unfortunately Sensei Ash and Trevor had family commitments and were not able to instruct, Sensei Mike Gude from Haxby Club kindly offered to come and put us through our paces.

Helen, Thomas, Rebecca and myself travel to train with Sensei Mike most Thursdays and we all appreciated Sensei travelling to offer us the benefit of his experience on Sunday.

When an instructor visits another club he will give the best instruction he can and will expect the best effort form the students he is teaching. This will "raise the game" for all, instructor and students alike.

We have a lot of beginners who have only been training for a couple of weeks and this raise in pace may have taken them a little out of their comfort zone. However this should be considered as good preparation for courses and gradings with our chief instructor Kato Shihan.

At the beginning of the class I explained the meaning and words of our formal rei and then welcomed Sensei Mike with rei and introduction.

Sensei Mike's instruction included the importance of good stance, for both attack and defence. In Kihon he concentrated on good form in our punches in both stance and stepping and moving on into combinations.

Towards the end of the first session he broke down Heian Shodan into "bite size"chunks so all could follow, concentrating on stance and the transfer of weight when changing position and moving.

Our middle session is aimed more towards 6th and 5th Kyu's, Sensei moved onto combinations and and the importance of hand and foot finishing together. The theme progressed through Kata. Our mid grades had a good 30 minutes of intensive training.

Our final session is aimed at 4thKyu to Black belt, we started with Kata, Heian Yondan, Godan, Tekki Shodan, Basai Dai and Jion. We went onto semi-free kumite aimed at our 1st Kyu's, Sensei is looking at developing spirit, a confidence that can come from a relaxed but powerful technique. Sensei is a big believe in attack in defence, why move back in defence when you can move forward or to the side. Semi free is a big step from 1 step, but Helen and Thomas are progressing well. With a Shodan grading in their sights for 2007?

Thank you Sensei for you instruction and thank you to all our students, although we have quite a few beginners at the moment your etiquette and effort during training was commendable.

They both did well on Kata and showed a wide variety of techniques on the Kumite section, they found 4th Kyu Kihon to be challenging to say the least, both were promoted to 4th Kyu.

Dave's grit and determination saw him through on the day, despite running his stamina tanks on empty. Well done mate, now you can enjoy your karate, courses with Sensei are a lot better when you know you haven't got to grade at the end of them, you can relax and watch others going through it.

On saturday night nearly twenty of us went out to dinner with Sensei to celebrate 25 years of the Haxby Dojo. Sensei Mike said a few words and presented three gifts, one to Kato Shihan who has been Haxby's chief instructor for all of those 25 years, to Sensei Ian who is the only remaining member who has been training with Haxby club for the full 25 years and to Gullen Shihan for the support he has given over the period. A good time was had by all and a brave few even ventured onto the dance floor.
