Sensei Trevor Jinks

Just a quick note to let you all know that Sensei Trevor has decided that the time has come for him to hang up his Gi after nearly 25 years with Selby Karate Club.
Trevor still plans to drop by from time to time and we will of course be asking him to present the "Trevor Jinks Cup" each year on the last training session before Christmas.

SSKC welcomes Sensei Paul Hyland

Above : Sensei Paul Hyland

Sensei Paul Hyland SKIF Ireland visited the Hambleton Dojo of the SSKC tonight. Paul trains at St.Vincent's and St .Joseph's in Dublin, Ireland and is a Sempai of Sensei Jacqui O'Shea 5th Dan.

I do not know Paul's senior instructor, but Rebecca and I have met and trained with Sensei Jacqui in Italy and Ireland. Rebecca has competed against (and beaten by) Sensei Jacqui in Ireland, not surprising really, she is a world champion!

Like Sensei Paul, if you are working away from home and want somewhere to train you will recieve a warm welcome from all of us at SSKC, Osu!

Date for the Diary - Sensei Langley & Herbert

Above: Sensei Langley an Herbert

A date for the diary later in the year; is a course in E17 with Sensei Scott Langley (JKS) and Sensei Paul Herbert (ASK).

Most of our more senior students would have trained with Langley Sensei before, but may not be that familiar with Herbert Sensei.

Herbert Sensei was a kohai of the late Enodea Sensei and has strong links with Hazard Sensei, it was Sensei Paul's club where I took Rebecca to train with Hazard Sensei a few weeks ago.

Anyway it is sure to be excellent training and for those of you not so familiar with the South of England E17 can be found at the end of the M11, so from Yorkshire drive down the A1 then M11 and then you only have about a mile to go!
(About 3 1/2 hours ish, but please check for yourselves)

Kagawa Sensei Inverkeithing Scotland

Above: Kagawa Sensei - 8th Dan JKS

Bex and I travelled North to the hombu dojo of JKS Scotland to train with Masao Kagawa Sensei 8th Dan JKS World technical director and JKF National coach. Many thanks to Sensei Paul & JKS Scotland for hosting the event and all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes.
Are we mad travelling 800Km for 1 & 3/4 hour training session?
I would say no.

I can't remember where I read it now, it may have been Bertel Sensei that stated if your Sensei is not training harder (wiser/longer) than yourself you may want to review who your Sensei should be. This was a direct reference to Asai Shihan, but as my own karate develops I think it is important that I don't stand still, but progress as fast as my aging frame will allow.

The Highlights of the 2 day trip, was the opportunity to talk to my wife Claire for a few hours, during the ten hour round trip drive. (All too often we are just passing in our own routines.)
The training - brillant! The 3 K's. Kihon - Gyaku Zuki & Geri, Kumite - stance changing, attack and counter drills & Kata - Meikyo Nidan. M2 is one of my favourite Kata and I even managed to sneak peak at Kagawa Sensei running Sensei Scott through M3. This helped to reinforce a kata that I am still working on.

As the Kyu class finished we bumped into Mia, who used to train at York before moving to Scotland. It was lovely to see her again, still training hard. Sensei Keith can be very proud of his Ex student, he gave her very strong foundations that have been recognised in the JKS.
I ended up being partnered with one of Mia's Sempai for most of the session and we did have a a bit of a chance to discuss her progress.

We were staying a little further North and the evening finished with a meal with Kagawa Sensei just round the corner from our Hotel. Bex and I also got a chance for a few words with Sensei Scott after our meal, hopefully he will be back in Yorkshire some time soon?

I genuinely thought after my grading I would take it easy for a while, no chance. I have been more motivated than ever to push myself on in my journey of Karate-do inspired by Shihan and Sensei from many varied organisations, my only focus, quality shotokan karate.

Shihan-Ne-Rei, Sensei-Ne-Rei, Otagai-Ne-Rei, Osu!

Is Yahara Shihan the "Angel of Kata"?

If you have never viewed "the committee's" unique Kata blog you may well want to, and with a little bit of thought make your own contribution.

This panel of high ranking dan grades are very hard to please and have a reputation at being ruthless in their rejection. It is like the "X Factor" but with 4 Simon Cowells!

Asai Shihan

Many thanks to the karateka that recently posted this video on You Tube of our late master, Asai Sensei. Unfortunately I can not embed at the request of the person that uploaded the video, but it is 9 minutes of sheer motivation, enjoy, Osu!
There is a lot of Sensei kihon kata that I have never seen before, this must be the best Asai video clip I have ever seen, it might take a while to upload but well worth it.

Harford Sensei in York

Rebecca and I joined Simon and Nick from Haxby, along with Eleanor from York at Sensei Liams's dojo to train with Sensei Gary Harford. Rebecca and I have trained with Sensei before so we knew were in for a good session, and we weren't disappointed.

Above: Gary Harford Sensei - 7th Dan - KUGB

Harford Sensei - The training

Sensei had us starting with correct technique, attacking with "Koshi" (ball) for Mae geri, "Sokuto" (foot edge) for Yoko geri and "Kakato" (Heel) for Usherio geri, the focus was on maai (distancing). Sensei had us kick to the wall ensuring we did not make full extension and lean away from the target. What sensei was after was a high knee position and driving forward with the hips forward of the supporting leg.

We partnered up for Gohon kumite and again Sensei commented on Maai, too many people were at the wrong distance to execute the technique correctly. We went on to practice "Teisho" (palm Heel) and "Empi" (elbow strikes) against the wall and partners.

We then were partnered up for Ippon Kumite, our challenge from Sensei was to block "Age Uke" to the Jodan attack, but then to execute either Gyaku Zuki, Teisho or Empi as a counter. Sensei's point was that you could not decide which to counter to after the attack had started, because you were not aware of the maai until then. You only had a split second to counter.

To me this was excellent training, action/ reaction, no planning, no thinking just do it. You may have not been right all the time, but it was obvious to you when you had selected the wrong counter.

Anyway after our warm ups with the KUGB I am feeling ready for another three hours of training at our own club tonight. Liam, many thanks for the invite, hopefully we can train again soon, Osu!

Harford Sensei - The man

Harford Sensei was born in Salford, Manchester on 21/4/60. He first began Karate training in 1972, he graded to 1st Dan in 1976 under Sensei Enoeda. He was selected as a member of the first Junior KUGB Squad and competed at the 1980 European Senior and Junior Championships held in Bregenz, Austria, at which he won 1st place in the Junior Team Kata and also 1st place in the Senior Kata.

Sherry’s Sensei had an enormous impact on him which enabled him to develop. In the KUGB National Championships at Crystal Palace, his highest place was 3rd in the Kumite event and 2nd in Kata.He has won the Shotokan Cup on two separate occasions, once in Kata and once in Kumite. His main highlight was being a member of the team that for many years dominated Karate in Great Britain, Europe and the World.

Three years have past.

Above : Asai Shihan 10th Dan - IJKA/JKS

On 15th August 2006 Asai Shihan sadly passed, but his karate lives on all over the world. I only had the honour to train with Sensei once (briefly) and will leave further comment to those for whom he was truly Sensei.

Bertel Sensei - 6th Dan has written an article for the Shotokan way on this anniversary, as always well worth a read.

Look after my Licence!

Mike Betts has been training with us since February with his daughter Shauna. Mike was returning to Shotokan after a long break and decided that now was the time that he could share his love of Shotokan with his daughter. It is not easy returning in your 50's, your mind can remember the katas, but the body struggles to return to its earlier flexibility.

Mike just put his white belt back on and got on with his training. He regularly joins in with the higher grade training at Selby and also attend sessions with Gullen Shihan in York.

Mike happened to have his old KUGB licence in his bag, so I asked him if I could take a copy. He explained that like so many his original licence had been lost, but his replacement had his last three grades registered. His parting words as he went to get changed..."you will look after my licence want you?"

Mike was an ex member of the Marshall Street dojo and his licence was stamped with the mark of the late Shihan Keinosuke Enoeda. Marshall Street dojo in London was the home of Shihan Enoeda in the early days of karate in England.

Milner Sensei visits Alsager

We are still tracking the movements of CSI Selby, or is it CSI Watford now? Our intelligence sources have reported sightings of her in the North West of England and she has been very remiss to let photographic evidence leak out. We understand that she has been attending secret additional sessions, learning treasured Asai Ryu kata, the story will continue...
