Beginners Course 18th November 2007

You could be wearing a Selby Shotokan Karate Club sweatshirt in 2008, forty years on from when the sweatshirt above was worn.

The date and very special price of our beginners course has been announced.

To celebrate our move to Barlby high school we will start our course on the 18th November 2007. Enrolling students will have to pay an IJKA fee of £17.50 to cover insurances and association membership, but you will not have to pay any training fees until March 2008, yes March 2008.

We have also reviewed our mat fees £15 for one, £25 for two or £35 for a family membership, these are monthly fees, so that is equal to £1.25/hr or less for two or more people training 3 hours a week.

We are a non-profit making club run by a committee for the benefits of it members in the study of traditional Shotokan karate.

Hope to see you soon, we offer training for all from 7 years upwards.

Training With Sensei Scott Langley

Above : Sensei Scott Langley 5th Dan JKS

Helen, Dave Rebecca and I travelled down to Loughborough today at the invitation of Sensi Hans Ranah to train with Sensei Scott Langley. Sensei Scott is the technical director of JKS GB & Ireland and is based in Dublin. Sensei Ian Shaw brought to my attention that his flyer for the course has Sensei Scott as a 5th Dan and mine which had been printed off a couple of months ago as a 4th Dan. So firstly let me first offer our congratulations from all your friends in the IJKA, Osu!

Sensei Scott's course had something for everyone what ever your grade from beginner to experienced Dan grade. Sensei instructed on the development of technique from Kihon to advanced technique in kumite. Sensei talked about speed being the key to effective technique something that is often replaced by power by most of us. Sensei also developed techniques that helped control kime, by not holding it too long.

Sensei Hans, now we know where you are we hope we can come down again and hopefully encourage a few more karateka to come along as well. Many thanks for inviting us, Osu!

Celebrate with Selby Shotokan Karate Club

Our club goes from strength to strength!

We have quite a few things to celebrate:

    • We will shortly be moving our dojo from the community school to the high school at Barlby just up the road. We will have use of the dance studio with mirrored walls and the gym, date to follow.
    • We will be running a beginners course with no training fees until March 2008, yes March 2008, more details to follow.
    • Fees for a parent and child or two children will reduce, yes go down!
    • The school is a sports academy and we will be working with the sports development officers to promote karate in Selby.
    • Sensei Andy Denby has been training with us for the best part of a year and is a great asset to our club. In recognition of his commitment to karate and especially the SSKC, he will be invited to take on the role of senior instructor. Sensei Ashley will of course remain the clubs chief instructor as the clubs longest serving Dan grade. Sensei Andy's knowledge of Kihon, Kata and Kumite seem endless, perhaps it is the 30 years experience? His ashi-bari is quite mean as well, you probably won't see it coming! Sensei, Osu! There is a link to Sensei Andy's member page in the side bar but give him a chance, it will take a while to get it all written down.

  • Rebecca helps raise the Union Flag

Rebecca helped raise the union flag at the local council offices with fellow Selby student Alice. This was the response of the government scrapping the limited flying rule of 18 days.
Rebecca had been chosen for her achievements in Karate and Alice with the scouts. Full details of the story can be found at http://www.selbytimes.co.uk/
Rebecca was also awarded a sports achievement award at Selby Abbey this week as part of the governors awards for students at Selby high school.
