Friends Re-united

This week I was contacted by David Wadsworth who was a member of the club in the early 1990's. David had kindly completed the details for an old members page.

I have created the page, just click on the "Old Members" tab in the side bar and then click on David's tab at the bottom of the table.

If any old members of SSKC read the blog from time to time, can you please drop me an E Mail, it would be great to expand this section of the blog, Osu!

"Simple is as Simple does"

Another great course with Koike Sensei last night in Nottingham.
Everything that Koike demonstrated looked so simple, perhaps it was just me making it difficult?

York Course and Grading

Above: The Course Photo
Wow! What a course!!

Many thanks to Campbell Sensei and Koike Sensei for a great day, and what a day it was for our clubs, Selby, Haxby, York and JKS York (Schools).

Above: The Course Slideshow

Please take a look at the members grading table , click on "Members" in the sidebar. Your New Grade has been recorded.
If you click on your name it will take you to your very own members page.
All our new members that have graded for the first time today, your member pages are now live.

A very quick run through how you all did:
Lee, Kira, Louis & Finlay all had good gradings and graded to 12th Kyu (Orange belt + 1 Tag)
Emily Double grade to 11th Kyu (Orange Belt + 2 Tags)

Charlotte & Phoebe graded to 9th Kyu ( Red Belt + 1 Tag)
Jamie Pearson passed 1 1/2 gradings to (Red Belt + 2 Tags)

Jamie Bellerby really pulled the stops out and graded to 5th Kyu (Purple Belt), Koike Sensei marked your Kihon as very strong, excellent effort.

Josh and Abby I was amazed at your gradings, I felt that you both had a good chance at obtaining half an Adult grade, you both got a full adult grade. On top of that Josh's Kihon was marked as above average and Kumite as well above average. Abby's Kihon was marked well above average, super, very good ( I think Koike Sensei liked it) and Kumite well above average also. It is too easy to forget that Josh and Abby are only 10 and 11 respectively.

Above : Bex and her Ninjas

Bex, you have done a great job with your "Little Ninjas", you can be very proud of them.

Congratulations to all the students that graded today from all the clubs, Osu!

A final special mention to Eleanor and Mike from York Shotokan Karate Club, Shodan! Wear your belts with pride and look forward to a new beginning in your training, Osu!

"Less is More"

"Less is More" a very well known phrase originally from Robert Browning in the 19th Century. Yesterday the context of the phrase referred to Sensei Steve Carless. Matt, Bex and I had travelled to the Kaizen-No-Michi dojo in Grimsby, home of Sensei Andrew and Jackie Jones to join them in their training session with Sensei Steve before their gradings.

Above : The Course

We have all trained with Sensei Steve in Nottingham on Black and Brown belt courses, he is the JKS England squad coach. Sensei Steve has a very informative, motivational style of instruction which is well received from karateka of all ages and grades. The session was action packed from start to finish. We are sure that Sensei Steve must also be a gymnast because Matt and myself wondered if we were going to survive the warm ups before the session had even started.

Above : Matt, Sensei Andrew, Jackie and Steve, Bex and Paul

The session started with correct front stance, Hamni and Shomen, Stepping back driving yori-ashi, striking, strangling and take downs. The session finished with Meikyo which fortunately Matt and I had practiced 2 weeks early for a whole session at Hambleton.

A great training session, Sensei ne Rei, Andrew and Jackie , many thanks for the invite and we look forward to seeing you at today's course with Sensei Alan and Koike, Osu!

The Panda Returns

Selby Shotokan Karate Club are proud to announce their partnership with McDonald's Kung Fu Panda 2 Happy Meal Promotion 2011.

McDonald's are providing a promotional voucher for a free lesson for children between 5 and 12 years of age in either of our dojo, at Barlby High School or Hambleton C of E Primary School.

Above : Po and his kohai

The promotion will run from the 15th June to the 2nd August 2011 in local McDonald's restaurants.

In association with our Local Authority and the extended schools scheme I will be offering a further two weeks free training so we can get the local children of North Yorkshire "active for free".

Parents are very welcome to have a go alongside the children and explore what could shortly be a new family activity to keep fit and have fun.

Craig Williams JKS England

Craig is one of the shinning lights in JKS England, a member of the team squad and a perfect balance of serious karteka meets cheeky chappy, making Craig an inspiration to his kohai.

Sensei Craig has just launched a blog which I have linked to at the foot of this post and in the links section in the sidebar. In Craig's first posts he talks about Junro Shodan and Teaching Children and I am looking forward to understanding more about karate from his view point.
