Sensei Trevor Jinks

Just a quick note to let you all know that Sensei Trevor has decided that the time has come for him to hang up his Gi after nearly 25 years with Selby Karate Club.

Trevor still plans to drop by from time to time and we will of course be asking him to present the "Trevor Jinks Cup" each year on the last training session before Christmas.

I would personally like to thank Trevor for his assistance and support over the last few years, you are an inspiration to all Karateka, Sensei-ne-rei, Osu!

Kato Shihan - York - 12/13th June 2010

Kato Shihan ne rei, yet another brilliant weekend, Osu!

As usual a mix of Kihon, Kata and Kumite, followed by gradings.

Well done to everyone that graded and to the following Selby Karateka:

Luke and Shauna graded to 10th Kyu.

Jamie and Nathan earned their Green belt by achieving a temporary 6th Kyu grade.

David graded to full 6th Kyu.

Abby, Josh and Lewis all earned their Purple belt by achieving a temporary 5th Kyu grade.

It will be great to see you all in you new belts next week and will hopefully motivate you to step up your training and look forward to consolidating your kata and start learning new ones in preparation for future gradings.

Grading Inspiration

Take a look at this Dan grading at the JKS Honbu dojo showing part of the kihon techniques required for 1.dan - demonstrated by a 6 year old boy and a 7 year old girl - they both passed.

With the release of Karate kid 2 will all our dojo be full?

I didn't notice a big leap in attendance after Kung Fu Panda was released, but we did have a brilliant night out at the cinema with Haxby dojo.

Perhaps we need an IJKA Yorkshire night out when KK2 is released.

Perhaps Sensei Simon might find a couple of moves that will help him eventually win something...lol.

Kick for Children with Cancer- 18th July 2010

"Kick for Children with Cancer" is a national sponsored football event, raising money for CLIC Sargent, the children’s cancer charity, patroned by Gary Lineker.

We would like all our karetaka from IJKA Yorkshire to get involved and raise money for this really worthwhile cause. You will receive more details with your sponsor packs at the course next week or from your Sensei. There will be a beat the Goalie/Sensei competition and lots of football skills sessions. You don't have to be any good at football to take part, the sessions will be designed for all abilities.

This year they hope to raise £150,000 to support children with cancer and their families. They want 100,000 children taking part. Schools, clubs and groups can choose to keep 25% of the money they raise with 75% going to support CLIC Sargent.

The money you raise by taking part in Kick for Children with Cancer will help CLIC Sargent continue its vital support and services to children with cancer and their families.

Bag Packing at Tesco

There was a rather disappointing turn out despite Julie's efforts to rally the troops.

However Marcus, Amy, Ellie, Josh and Shauna between them packed loads of bags and raised a total of £192.50! These monies are ring fenced in our accounts to support the development of our karateka.

Yesterdays Competition

I hope everyone had a great time at the competition Yesterday.

Firstly apologies to Sensei Andy for forgetting to mention "Denby Security Services" as a sponsor of the event. The previous results post has also been updated and please click in the sidebar on SSKC Cups and you will see details of each of the cups, their sponsors and the winners.

Well how did Selby get on?

Very well done to our beginners from the Hambleton dojo, Marcus, Michael, Jamie and Harry, I hope you didn't find the kata too daunting and you did well in the knee boxing , perhaps a medal next year?

Leila managed 4th place in the Under 12 kata, just missing out on a medal. Abby had a very tough draw getting drawn against Elanor the eventual winner in the first round.

In the Under 17 Kata Josh Robinson was the lowest grade at 9th Kyu and was competing within a fairly large group, including 5 brown belts. He lost in the semi finals to Holly the eventual winner and lost against Nick last years winner for 3rd place, ending with a very respectful 4th place.

In the Over 16 Kata up to 3rd Kyu David beat Holly in the semi and lost against Max for an eventual 2nd place an excellent result, Kelvin was pipped by Holly for 3rd place and came 4th.

In the Over 16 high grade Kata Michael put in some very strong performances and ended up 2nd with Rebecca coming 3rd.

In the Family kata the Dallisons got 4th place to a clean sweep by the Bamfords. Next year we need to enter more teams to increase our chances.

In the U12 Kumite Nathan was unlucky to get drawn against Lucas the eventual winner in the first round, Liam fought well through to the final and ended up with 2nd place.

In the U17 Kumite Josh Robinson went one better than kata and won a 3rd place medal.

In the low grade Over 16 kumite David was knocked out by Max and in the play off for 3rd place was knocked out by Simon from York to end up 4th. Kelvin met Max in the final and fought well ending a very close 2nd.

In the Over 16 Female kumite Julie came 1st and Claire 2nd, well done ladies!

In the O16 high grade kumite Michael was pipped into 2nd place by Max.

I have updated all your member pages with your achievements, these can be viewed by clicking on members in the side bar and clicking on your name.

Our congratulations goes to Max from York who I think won everything he entered even the events above his grade!

Hey "Gringo!"

Many thanks to David "Gringo" Leadbeater for yet more SSKC Fundraising.

David took part in a sponsored moustache growing marathon for 31 days. I thought he had been growing it for a week and Rebecca did not realise that David was doing it as a fundraiser and just thought it was a strange thing that men of David's age do from time to time...

Unfortunately David made sure that there was no photographic evidence, (I am sure there must be somewhere) so I have had to adapt an old photo.

David has raised a further £80.00, excellent!

Every Little Helps

It is proposed to hold a bag pack at Tesco Selby to help raise club funds on Saturday 24th April 2010 from mid morning to mid afternoon.
We would like to have as many children as possible in karate Gi, each team of two children will need an adult to assist them.
Can you confirm your availability to Julie as soon as possible so she can finalise the details with the store and communicate to you all.

Record Sunday!

There was record attendance this Sunday with a total of 6 Dan grades and 31 members training.

Our numbers were bolstered by members from York and Haxby training at Barlby in preparation for the competition in May.

All karateka even beginners that have not graded yet will be encouraged to take part in what will be a brilliant afternoon on Sunday 2nd May.

Can I ask that you return your entry forms this week to enable me to conclude the planning phase and order all the cups and medals.

Haxby and York clubs are keen to relieve us of as much silverware as possible, so we must keep our training up. We will still be training on Easter Sunday so don't eat too many Easter Eggs during the day and you can always get an extra session in on a Wednesday to increase your chances of walking away with a medal or trophy.

Was "The Force" with me?

This weekend I travelled back down south for the Army Martial Arts Competition. I spent my teenage years and early twenties in the area and have both family and friends very local.
I stayed with Michael, who was my best man at my wedding , his partner Suasan and their two young children James and Owen.
After a meal, a game of cards, a couple of lagers and a bottle of wine (all essential pre- competition preparation). Susan said that they had prepared the spare room and the boys and her had decided that I should have the "Stars Wars" quilt cover and hopefully the force would be with me the following day.

My inspiration to compete is to improve my own personal performance. It is nice to win a trophy or medal now and again, but for me if I have pushed myself and performed well, that is enough.
As a 48 year old part time solider, I was putting myself up against younger, fitter and more experienced karateka, I was the oldest karateka there by quite a few years. It is good to put yourself out of your comfort zone now and again to improve your own karate.

In Kata I performed Hangetsu in the first round and made it through to the second round. For my second kata I performed Kanku Sho, I manged to get to the end of both kata without suffering from the "frozen kata syndrome" that normally plagues me. I scored probably just under half way down the rankings, well out of the medals but had performed better than I have ever done before.
The Kumite was fought in two Pools of 4 on a round robin, the top 2 from each pool going into a fight off. The other three dan grades in my pool were all members of the Army Karate team and two of them also compete for England. I was very, very pleased , to loose 2 and win 1.

I had a long drive North to Bradford to take part in the City's 10k. The troop from Bradford had decided to raise some monies for charity by each of us carrying an additional 20Kg as we went round. We were paced round by our PTI at a forced march to complete the 10 k in 1hour and 31 minutes, very close to the back markers who were getting worried that we were catching them.

Thank you Susan, I think the force might have been with me after all. Perhaps I can make a booking for the Star Wars suite for next year as well?
