Kanazawa Shihan

Kanazawa Shihan has reportedly taught for the last time in the UK and Ireland.
He will now limit himself to Japan and is likely to leave international travel to his son and other senior instructors.
The interview below was recorded 3 years ago, but gives all karateka a lot to think about going into a new year.

Selby Shotokan Karate Club has a long history, its roots were with the Kokusai Shotokan Karate Renmei Kodokai.
The President - Hirokazu Kanazawa.
The badge above was recently given to me by an Ex member Sensei Luis Bastidas who joined the SSKC back in 1982 as a school boy (more details in the old members section)

Black and Brown belt course this weekend

In a couple of hours I will be heading for Whitchurch with Josh for another weekends training at the IJKA hombu dojo. As always never sure what the weekend will bring...we will have to wait and see. Last time Josh attended he was introduced to ten katas that he had never seen before, hopefully we are not in for a repeat session?

Is Yahara Shihan the "Angel of Kata"?

If you have never viewed "the committee's" unique Kata blog you may well want to, and with a little bit of thought make your own contribution.

This panel of high ranking dan grades are very hard to please and have a reputation at being ruthless in their rejection. It is like the "X Factor" but with 4 Simon Cowells!

Asai Shihan

Many thanks to the karateka that recently posted this video on You Tube of our late master, Asai Sensei. Unfortunately I can not embed at the request of the person that uploaded the video, but it is 9 minutes of sheer motivation, enjoy, Osu!
There is a lot of Sensei kihon kata that I have never seen before, this must be the best Asai video clip I have ever seen, it might take a while to upload but well worth it.

Kato Shihan teaches Kanku Dai

I have posted two videos of Kato Shihan teaching "Kanku dai" in Tallin, Estonia. There is a total of sixteen and a half minutes of footage, brilliant, many thanks for posting Estonia, Osu!

I was lucky enough to visit Tallin in 2006, what a wonderful city. On my return I was discussing with Sensei a wonderful medieval restaurant "Olde Hansa" in Vana Turg 1, well worth a visit, the best Bear, Barley and Meade in town. It turned out that our friends from Estonia had taken Sensei their for a meal as well. If you ever get the chance to train with Sensei in Estonia, jump at it, cheap flights and accommodation make it affordable...maybe 2010?

Three years have past.

Above : Asai Shihan 10th Dan - IJKA/JKS

On 15th August 2006 Asai Shihan sadly passed, but his karate lives on all over the world. I only had the honour to train with Sensei once (briefly) and will leave further comment to those for whom he was truly Sensei.

Bertel Sensei - 6th Dan has written an article for the Shotokan way on this anniversary, as always well worth a read.

Hiroshi Shirai Shihan course - Birmingham

Above : Hiroshi Shirai Shihan - 9th DanWSI

Shirai Shihan was born on 31st July 1937 in Nagasaki, Japan and started Karate in 1956 in Komazawa University.
His instructors there were Nishiyama & Tsujima Sensei. He received his Shodan in 1957 with Yamamoto and Kano Sensei.
He then attended the JKA Instructor's course from 1960 to 1962 with Watanabe, Kano and Nakajama where Nakayama, Nishiyama, Kase & Sugiura Sensei were his instructors. This was the course after Asai Sensei. He won the Japan Championships in 1962.
Sensei Shirai became a 9th Dan in 1999. He is the head of the World Shotokan Institute (WSI) and has been based in Italy since 1965.

Above : Shirai Shihan with members of IJKA Yorkshire

Gullen Shihan, Gude Sensei, Simon, Rebecca, Michael and myself travelled the 500km round trip to Birmingham today to train on the Goshin Shotokan Karate Do course. Both Shirai and Kase Shihan were a big influence in Sensei Andy's karate. I could recognise the way Andy builds his Kihon and develops his kumite drills from what we were taught today. Shirai's karate has a strong feel of Budo, the single 100% attack with nothing held back.

To me the training had a feel of Hangetsu, we would start with application and then train Goshin kata. A feel of strong controlled techniques starting "uchi" so that a rapid second technique could be blocked and countered. Techniques were practiced with attacks first in four and then eight directions. Defences were also executed with the attacker stepping in, walking towards or from behind, each time being subjected to a double attack.

Everyone will take away something different from the course, but for me I felt that I could react and turn 180 degrees in defense quicker than normal in the Goshin style stance.

Shotokan wheelchair kata videos

I added to the Kata Video pages 6 posts with shotokan wheelchair kata from Heian Shodan through to Tekki Shodan. They are performed with good Zanshin and strong technique.

If you click on the Kata link below, the disabled Shotokan katas are at the very bottom of the kata table in the left hand column in the disabled kata section. I hope I can get some Asai wheelchair kata footage to post soon. If anyone has any I would greatly welcome their donation.

I can faintly remember Kato Shihan teaching me the first Asai wheelchair kata when I was probably a yellow belt and I have not done it since, I can only remember the first 4 moves.
