IJKA Instructors

Shihan S. Kato - 8th Dan - European Chief Instructor IJKA Europe

Kato Shihan was born on the 22nd July 1943 in Kochi Japan, he attended the world famous Takushoku university and trained under Sensei Tsuyama, Kanazawa and Urui. He was sent by the JKA to Germany in 1966 and later on to the UK. Kato Shihan travels extensively around Europe teaching. We are very fortunate that he runs three or four courses and gradings in the York area every year. The photo above left shows Kato Shihan with one of our junior karateka, Daniel Kozelko .

Shihan K.D.Gullen - 6th Dan - IJKA Northern Regional Coach Gullen Shihan is a former European and World Champion who runs his own club at St Olaves school in York on a Wednesday evening. Gullen Shihan also instructs at the Selby Club four times a year. This is an ideal time for our younger karateka to lift both their level of training and etiquette. The photo above right shows Gullen Shihan at our dojo at Barlby School during a recent course .

Club Instructors

Sensei Ashley Dilcock - 3rd Dan Ashley was awarded his Sandan in May 2003 by the assocation's chief instructor Kato Shihan 8th Dan. Quite an achievement at only 21 years old.
Ashley trained for many years under the direction of Gullen Shihan, based in York. Left: Sensei Ash in Cyprus IJKA Championships Team Kata Champions 2004

Sensei Trevor Jinks - 1st Dan
Trevor is the most senior and respected member of our club. Approaching 70 years old he is an inspiration to us all. Trevor was awarded his Shodan in March 1998. When you are tired you just look to your left and there is Sensei Trevor still going strong, so you just can't give up when a man of Trevors maturity is still training hard. Sensei Trevor is very active and has many interests but still he manages to find the time to train and assist Sensei Ashley at the club.

Well done to all our students who took part in the recent Kata competition. You are all a credit to our club, Sensei Mike Gude and Sensei Ian Shaw were impressed by both your performances and behaviour.

Special congratulations to Dominic who won the kata cup, Dominic will retain the cup for twelve months until the competition is run again.

Our special thanks goes to our newer members who took part, a competition is only sucessful if everybody is brave enough to have a go.

SSKC - Home

Welcome - At Selby Shotokan Karate Club we teach a traditional form of Karate under the direction of the International Japanese Karate Assocation's European Chief Instructor Kato Shihan.

The club is run by Sensei's Ashley Dilcock - 3rd Dan and Trevor Jinks - 1st Dan. The club also takes part in regular training with Shihan Kato - 8th Dan and Shihan Gullen - 6th Dan. Whether you are just starting out in your martial arts training or are an experienced Karateka, our club will have something to offer you.

Our Club trains at Barlby Primary School, just outside Selby in North Yorkshire. Training starts at 5.30p. Just turn up and have a go! Beginners train from 5.30 to 7pm, the first two sessions are free followed by a 10 week introduction course which is only £30. We are a non-profit making club and the easy start means that you will be training for 3 months before you need to think about joining an assocation or buying a training uniform etc. (unlike many clubs).

We offer training to anyone from 7 years or over. Students should wear loose sports clothing, no jewellary (including earrings), Training suits (Gi's) can be ordered through the club at a discount rate. Gi's are not essential until you decide to join the assocation, but many chose to get them earlier.

Students grade from 12th kyu (for juniors) or 9th Kyu (for adults) to Shodan (Black Belt). Most students are ready to grade every 4 months fro the first few gradings, as you progress the time span increases as the syllabus becomes more involved.

Gradings are taken in the York Area under the direction of Kato Shihan along with a training course. Current grading fees are £6 for 12th Kyu to 10th Kyu and £10 fro 11th Kyu to 1st Kyu.

We see a lot of students develop in self-confidence, become more disciplined, learn to respect others and enjoy the physical activity. These are all benefits of martial art training. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. We hope you enjoy training with us!
