A big welcome to Rhys & Olivia!

Rhys and Olivia, welcome to our club. It was great to see you both training last night.
I hope you are enjoying the sessions and hope Rebecca didn't work you too hard on your first sessions when I was away.

Rebecca has got quite a reputation you know. I believe she even brought "Mr Shinai" (bamboo sword) down training one week.

"Mr Shinai" is a great motivational instructor for our more experienced karateka, and even if he is silent in the corner he seems to work his magic...lol.

CLIC Update

On Sunday 18th July we held an event to raise money for "Kick for Children with Cancer" a national sponsored football event, raising money for CLIC Sargent, the children’s cancer charity, patroned by Gary Lineker.

This year they hope to raise £150,000 to support children with cancer and their families. They want 100,000 children taking part. Schools, clubs and groups can choose to keep 25% of the money they raise with 75% going to support CLIC Sargent.

The Total raised was £421... yes £421!
25% will go to SSKC Funds = £105.25 and
75% will go to CLIC Sargent = £315.75 with gift aid this should be worth £404.16
A great effort and a big thank you to all that took part.

The money you raised by taking part in Kick for Children with Cancer will help CLIC Sargent continue its vital support and services to children with cancer and their families.

Watch the film to see how your support will make a real difference.

A phrase, a word, together a single theme.

I will share with you a theme that has been bouncing around in my head for a few days based on a short phrase and a single word.

The phrase ..."Works well when watched." It is a bit of a double edged compliment it acknowledges capacity, but notes that effort is sometimes lacking.
I have used this phrase regularly in the Army while talking to a 3rd party, but well within earshot of the person to whom I was referring.
It usually has the desired effect of additional effort from the individual when unsupervised.

The Word..."Osu!". While training at Haxby on Thursday Sensei Mike was asked by a lady who has recently joined the dojo what "Osu" meant. Mike explained that it could be substituted for hello, goodbye, yes, okay, I understand etc but suggested that the karateka asked me later, when I might have a fuller description.

When you look at the characters that form the word, the first character means to push, to control, to surpress and symbolizes 100% effort. The second character has a picture of a heart and means to endure, or to conceal, it can also mean to be silent.
Together Osu! is a pledge to do ones very best and to endure.

Karate involves a great deal of self reflection.
A karateka that devotes energy to attracting attention rather than to learning karate does not act in silence.
The effort should be to learn karate, not to impress you teacher.
A karateka like Sensei Trevor has always been humble and reserved. His efforts in self training where in the main independent of recognition of others, he is indeed our Sensei.

It is difficult to continually challenge yourself, to work hard even though there are no others to provide encouragement. To improve we all need to work on our fitness, flexibility, Kihon, Kumite and Kata outside of our dojo training.

Remember each time we say Osu! we are pledging to work hard.

Sensei Trevor Jinks

Just a quick note to let you all know that Sensei Trevor has decided that the time has come for him to hang up his Gi after nearly 25 years with Selby Karate Club.
Trevor still plans to drop by from time to time and we will of course be asking him to present the "Trevor Jinks Cup" each year on the last training session before Christmas.

Monday is Asai Shihan Memorial Day

This Sunday look forward to some Asai style karate.
Monday, Bex and I will be training with Gullen Shihan in York.
