Many thanks to the karateka that recently posted this video on You Tube of our late master, Asai Sensei. Unfortunately I can not embed at the request of the person that uploaded the video, but it is 9 minutes of sheer motivation, enjoy, Osu!

There is a lot of Sensei kihon kata that I have never seen before, this must be the best Asai video clip I have ever seen, it might take a while to upload but well worth it.

Kaminari Arashi - Thunderous Storm

I have posted a copy of Bertel Sensei performing "Kaminari Arashi".

I have known of this kata for a while but have never seen it before. It is posted on u-Tube with tomorrows date, it confused me for a minute, but then I remembered it is already tomorrow in Japan. Sensei many thanks in sharing this very dynamic footage, Osu!

Three years have past.

On 15th August 2006 Asai Shihan sadly passed, but his karate lives on all over the world. I only had the honour to train with Sensei once (briefly) and will leave further comment to those for whom he was truly Sensei.

Asai Ryu Kata Article

A steady week, even if it is the holidays.

It was a quite Sunday for the SSKC, the last training session at Barlby for August (the next 3 Sundays are at Hambleton). Just myself and fourteen kyu grades, Sensei Andy was away enjoying the Scottish cuisine.

There was a fairly even mix of low grades and 5th kyu and greater, no mid grades so I decided after Kihoon training to do "Gohon Kumite". After drilling in kihon form for the lower grades each partnered with a higher grade. Jodan attack, Ichi........Go, attack change, then change partners, seven sets jodan each low grade with each high grade. Then onto chudan, then onto full Gohon kumite. With seven sets I could start slow to count and gradually build up in speed until no count speed and power, (control for the higher grades). 45 minutes of Gohon kumite went quickly and the session was over.
The second session just left myself and Dom, Dom is preparing for Shodan. I ran through all the Kihon that Kato Sensei did for the Shodan gradings in Budapest a few years ago. I knew that note book would come in handy. It is amazing how Sensei can put a short string of basic techniques into such difficult combinations. We also worked on Jion and a little Kanku Sho.

Wednesday at Hambleton was very quite, Sensei Andy was back from his hols and when he asked what were we going to do I requested Heian Nidan. Sensei drilled us in Kihon, application and Kata. Julie and Amy were doing fairly basic form and Rebecca and I were set with all sorts of challenges all around H2. A great session for all four of us, Sensei ne rei, Osu!

Tonight, I went to train with Sensei Mike at Haxby, training starts at 19.00hrs, but I can sometimes sneak into the hall at 18.00hrs when they open the door to "fat fighters" in the adjacent room. I had been sitting in my car flicking through my note book and found some scribblings of two kata that I hadn't done for a couple of years.

The first was Mawari No Kata, this was devised by Koller Shihan and the second was the Asai ryu kata, kokutsu-dachi No Kata. I spent an hour trying to remember them, with Mawari No Kata I was ok until the last few moves, the Gyaku Zukis didn't seem quite right and my scribblings weren't helping.

Kokutsu-dachi-No-Kata, I had tried to remember about a year ago and again my notes had failed me when I couldn't remember the transitions or which way to turn, a couple of notes didn't make much sense. However I was still trying to figure it out when Sensei Mike turned up. Then suddenly, a couple of pennies dropped, I could remember Sensei teaching it and little details of half steps and spinning. I think I nearly have it now.
Sensei Mike had to leave early so I was Instructing for about the last hour. We started with back stance, starting with just the feet. Then I had the white belts just stepping blocking shuto and all the purple belts and above eventually doing the kata. I found myself really enjoying this kata, perhaps it has changed for me now I have a basic knowledge of Bassai Sho and Kanku Sho, I can appreciate better what I am meant to be doing. I finished with the Brown belts and above focusing on when to turn on the ball and when the heel for smooth transition. I hope everyone enjoyed learning it as much as I did teaching it, Osu!

Shotokan wheelchair kata videos

I added to the Kata Video pages 6 posts with shotokan wheelchair kata from Heian Shodan through to Tekki Shodan. They are performed with good Zanshin and strong technique.

If you click on the Kata link below, the disabled Shotokan katas are at the very bottom of the kata table in the left hand column in the disabled kata section. I hope I can get some Asai wheelchair kata footage to post soon. If anyone has any I would greatly welcome their donation.

I can faintly remember Kato Shihan teaching me the first Asai wheelchair kata when I was probably a yellow belt and I have not done it since, I can only remember the first 4 moves.

Hyakuhappo videos added

I have added a couple of videos of Hyakuhachiho the older more traditional name for Hyakuhappo. I have also posted a video of Suparinpei a similar Goju ryu kata which appears to have shared foundations?
I seem to remember something about Hyakuhachiho being a 27th kata?
It is mentioned somewhere in Nakayama's books, answers on a E-mail.....

New Year - fresh start

For 2009 I have ambitions both for our club and for myself.
Andy and I want to actively develop the club during 2009, it will mean a fair bit of background work, but I hope by the summer you will see a few changes for the better that will benefit all of our members.
I also have personal goals where I want to apply myself fully to my Karate, where my body can't keep up I want to apply my mind a little more.

The training started tonight with Sensei Helen doing a longer than normal warm up session. followed by some pad work and shuttle training.
There was no heating on and the school was freezing!
Sensei Andy followed this with some Kihon training, just 6 weeks to gradings so we had all better start trying our best.

At 7pm most of the lower grades leave and we have another 90 mins training left.

I had spent some of the afternoon thinking about kata and I wanted to do something that would make some of the other Brown and Black belts think as well.
I took chunks from a few higher katas and got the brown and black belts to demonstrate them and then the class from purple belt up had to imitate 3 time to count and then 3 times no count.
It is not always easy being asked to start in the middle of a kata.

Helen started with Chinte - from Age Empi to the first Ippon ken
then Dom with Empi - from gedan bari through the first Kia to the double punch
Back to Helen with Kashu - from move 3 to 9
Dom on again with Nijushiho- from the sukui uke, yame teisho through the first Kia and the next 2 moves of the collapse and strike.

At this stage I could see the class not quite sure where this session was going???

Helen was back on again Nijushiho - but this time the last few moves from kiba dachi through the sanchin dachi movements.
Dom again with Empi - The sukui uke followed by the 3 steps double teisho, gedan bari, yame zuki, jump and two shutos.

Where is this all leading to???

I did the Meikyo bit - from the bo uke, driving forward turning and stepping into Kida dachi.
Next Sam was up, Bassai Dai - from the Miki Zuki Geri through to the end of the three Yama Zukis. I then got Sam to do just the three Yama Zuki in Kiba dachi where we left off from the Meikyo sequence.

We then recapped all the snipts of the Kata we had just practised and came to Yoi.
We announced our Kata......

Meikyo Nidan.......(Had you guessed?)

The start of Meikyo, the feel of Chinte, the double punch of Empi, the crane stance sequences followed by the open hand strike of Kashu, the collapse and strike of Nijushiho followed by the last move in sanchin-dachi. The transition in Empi before the jump followed by the Mekiyo bit pushing forward and turning followed by the 3 Yame Zuki punches. A few more shutos, nukite and a 360 degree turn and step back finishing with a final shuto and we are all done!

I went on to break down the kata and teach it in a bit more detail, Sensei Andy reminded me about a few of the details that I had not retained. The third Hiato mawashi uke finishes Migi sho facing down all other sho movements are palm up. Most of the punches are Tate Zuki and Andy also thought that the 4th move the hands are sho not Ken, I am sure he is right?

Even if the body is tired after Christmas I was happy with my reconstruction of the kata, I hope the class was too?

Shotokan and Asai Ryu Katas

I have posted approx 150 kata videos, they are easily searched from a table of Shotokan and Asai Ryu kata.There are approximately 4 videos for each of the main 26 Shotokan kata and a few videos of some of the Asai Ryu kata.

The video are NOT posted so that you can teach yourself a kata, but are there for karateka like myself that forget a particular movement or transition. Please ask the advise of your Sensei what you should be practising for the development of your Karate.

All the Video are embeded from "U-Tube" and are in the public domain. However if you are the owner / holder of the copyright to a video and wish me to remove it, please drop me an e-mail and I will action your request with immediate effect.

I would also be very pleased to hear of your suggestions for the correction of spelling mistakes, additional names and videos to add to this data base of Shotokan and Asai Ryu Kata.
