Kick for Children with Cancer- 18th July 2010

"Kick for Children with Cancer" is a national sponsored football event, raising money for CLIC Sargent, the children’s cancer charity, patroned by Gary Lineker.

We would like all our karetaka from IJKA Yorkshire to get involved and raise money for this really worthwhile cause. You will receive more details with your sponsor packs at the course next week or from your Sensei. There will be a beat the Goalie/Sensei competition and lots of football skills sessions. You don't have to be any good at football to take part, the sessions will be designed for all abilities.

This year they hope to raise £150,000 to support children with cancer and their families. They want 100,000 children taking part. Schools, clubs and groups can choose to keep 25% of the money they raise with 75% going to support CLIC Sargent.

The money you raise by taking part in Kick for Children with Cancer will help CLIC Sargent continue its vital support and services to children with cancer and their families.

Watch the film to see how your support will make a real difference.

Kelvin's trip to Ethiopia - Facing africa

Above : The Hospital Above : the People

kelvin writes:

"This year the NOMA team went out to Addis for a total of 10 weeks. We sent out a team for preparation of the the patients 2 weeks before the main surgical team. This included feeding, cleaning & de worming amongst other things! The main team arrived on the 4th October staying until 18th October (so I missed the grading). It consisted of 5 surgeons (2 French & 3 British), 2 anaesthetists, 1 scrub nurse, 1 ward nurse plus, of course, Chris& Terry who run Facing Africa.

Using a local hospital we managed to treat over 40 patients surgically, this mainly consisted of children with the effect of NOMA, but we also helped some burn victims, gun shot injuries, some tumours & some post traumatic facial injuries. we even had to amputate an infected hand injury repair someone axed in the face, We also advised on other conditions to help the local medical staff.

I was invited to lecture to all the medical staff in Addis. When the main team left a doctor remained or the post operative care as required. Every day was busy as you can imagine but we were kindly taken out each evening courtesy of Facing Africa. Making the trip very enjoyable & a tremendous learning experience.

It was quite humbling to see how the patients smile through such terrible adversity.

Regards Kelvin"

Kelvin attached a few photos but probably not quite suitable for the blog. (Some photos now added)

If you haven't seen before the work that Kelvin does with the Facing Africa charity please take a look at the links in the sidebar.

"Facing Africa" is a really worth while cause and where hard earned money is spent wisely. If you are thinking of doing something for a charity please consider them.

Facing Africa Update

19th April 2008 - I did a quick 10 minute presentation to my Squadron at Halton in Lancaster, the power point show is quite moving and really only suitable for Adults. The lads now have a bit more of an idea of what we are raising money for.
20th April 2008 - Over the weekend we had a reporter from the Star in Sheffield with us, he wanted to know more about Noma and the Facing Africa charity, a 20 min chat and a spot in the paper.
27th April - Sheffield 1/2 Marathon

106 Fd Sqn RE (v) provide an essential water stop

Approx 5000 runners passed our water stop, most of the elite runners didn't bother to stop but the service was greatly appreciated by many.

Charlotte - sporting the 106 facing Africa t shirt
Finishing 1st of the female 106 runners (the only female runner) but in a very respectful time, well done

"Pricey" water on the go
One of our best runners and part of our team that came a very respectful 2nd with an average time of around 1hr 35mins, beating around 60 other teams many from athletic clubs. Not bad from a unit that tries to match hard work with hard drinking.

"Chads" digs in deep
Chads - not the fastest on the course but what an effort, you don't have to be an athlete to put yourself through a bit of pain to raise a few quid for Facing Africa.
About 15 members of the Squadron ran, Facing Africa was a bit of an after thought, the main fund raising effort will be at camp in June when I hope to organise a 10k run run.
I will up date what we have raised when I get some details.

SSKC Noma 10K £10 Challenge

I wrote in a previous post a couple of days ago that I would like the club to do something for the charity Dr Kelvin has been working with: "Facing Africa".

Kelvin drop me an e mail saying that he is doing a 10k run for the charity in July and challenging me (and other members of SSKC) to join him, or just make a donation.

This got me thinking....what about "pyramid challenging", it's a bit like pyramid selling but hopefully it will allow us to make a difference to the charity in 2008.

Here is what you have to do in a few easy steps:

  1. Accept the challenge and agree to run, jog or walk 10k between now and the end of July.
  2. Agree to raise a minimum of £10 for the charity.
  3. E mail me using the link in the sidebar accepting the challenge (so I can update readers on how many people have taken up the challenge)
  4. The Pyramid part... Challenge a minimum of three people to also take part, anywhere at anytime.
  5. The important bit....pay your sponsorship/donation to Facing Africa, you can use the link in the sidebar, please put a note in the comment section that you took part in the SSKC 10k £10 challenge.PS Don't forget to use gift Aid!
  6. Please e mail me and let me know how much you raised, I keep an ongoing total on the blog.

I have put a few links in the sidebar for your information:

"Noma" - What it is all about

"Kelvin's Page" - You Tube and BBC links on the Yorkshire medical team's work in Ethiopia

"Facing Africa" - A link to the charities web site

"Online Donations" - A link straight to the donation page

To try and make A big start I will be challenging all my Karate contacts, Army contacts and family, friends and work colleagues, all you have to do is accept the challenge and challenge three more people to do the same!

If you have jumped into the middle of our blog via a search engine you may want to go to our latest post; please follow the link below that will relaunch the blog
